SBARC Field Day 2006 Feedback: Ideas for FD 2007
QUESTIONS:
- What was okay, but could be better?
- What was hard, that could be made easier?
- What can we do to make the next FD more fun?
- What processes can we refine?
FEEDBACK:
- Investigate NVIS propagation for 10m
- Put 10m and 20m on GOTA, to add to our score
- Fill out roster for every station
- Get more radio participation (especially during the night)
- Be sure we use antenna traps next time -- they're absence was felt!
- Use experience from previous FD -- especially while ideas are fresh
- Create checklist for all processes!
- Perform radio pre-checks
- Familiarize everyone with operations of radio
- Have manual / cheat sheet on hand just in case
- Create summary of critical functions (cheat sheet)
- Band plan readily available at each station
- Have a mentor at each station in case issues arise
- Have option for users to bring their own equipment
- Corrdinate personal equipment usage with station captain(s)
- Greet guests and mentor them!
- Create "station captains" who can mentor and facilitate operations.
- Designate captains at least 1 month in advance for effective preparation
- Station captain ensures their station ready to go by start time.
- Field Day Captain oversees everything
- Antenna Captain - oversees antenna installations
- Facilities captain - oversees tables/chairs, etc
- Power captain - arranges emergency power and cabling
- Antenna captain - coordinates with station captains to streamline setup.
- Use HT radios during setup instead of having people run up/down stairs.
- Communicate blueprints/floorplan of FD setup -- make available to everyone.
- Make visible signs -- this is 20m, 40m station etc.
- Cross-training on all critical activities
- Rehearse procedures with club ahead of time (improves setup efficiency)
- Color code antennas -- sketch layout of assembly
- Antenna element position for reflector, director, driven element easy to spot
- Have antenna schematic on-hand just in case problems arise.
- Conduct assembly/disassembly training.
- Check / verify status of all cables before FD.
- Put new connectors on cables if needed.
- Need handoff device to ease antenna setup
- Recuit younger people for antenna setup / cross-train
- Create pulley for push-ups to ease antenna raising
- Need something to fit on bottom mount (safety factor) to prevent pushups from shooting thru
- Have repair tools on hand (soldering iron, etc) in case equipment needs quick fixing.
- Have emergency tools on hand for problems we can't anticipate
- Have headphones vs. 2 people a station
- Scratch pads, pens, pencils
- Especially for non-touch typists!
- Split stereo headphones into 2 mono headphones (then convert each to stereo)
- Headphones handy at 5am!
- Use radios we're most familiar with (if possible)
- Pre-size "all-thread" for antenna mounts (color code)
